New Delhi, July 5: While presenting her first Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said new Series of Coin - Re 1, Rs 2, 5, 10 and 20 will be made available for public use. These coins will be designed in a manner that they can be used by the visually impaired. At present, coins of 50 paise, Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5 and Rs 10 denomination of various sizes, theme and design are in circulation. Our of these coins, Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5 and Rs 10 are now available while that of Rs 20 coin will be newly launched. RBI Tells Banks to Accept Coins of All Denominations.
The RBI puts into circulation coins minted by the central government. These coins have distinctive features which are being introduced from time to time with various theme-economic, social and cultural, in order to meet the transaction needs of public. In March this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had released new series of coins for circulation with various differentiating features for the visually impaired. New coins of denominations Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5, Rs 10 and Rs 20 were released by the Prime Minister as part of the new series. While releasing the coins, the Prime Minister said that the move will greatly aid the Divyang community and will instill a sense of confidence in them.
In December 2018, the Prime Minister had released a commemorative Rs 100 coin in memory of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. With this, the Rs 100 currency will be the highest denomination in the form of a coin in India.
