Neral, December 10: Just a day after the Air-conditioned (AC) coach service was started in the Neral-Matheran toy train, the engine derailed on Sunday between Jumma Patti and Neral station. Meanwhile, toy train was carrying 105 passengers on board but no injuries were reported. The train services were terminated immediately and refund was paid to all passengers onboard. According to the Times of India report, the incident took place on Sunday evening at 5:10 pm, leading to the termination of service midway. After the incident, two train services were cancelled. Senior public relations officer of Central Railway while speaking to Mumbai Mirror said, “A wheel of the engine slipped off the rails. We have offered to refund the ticket fare. Ninety passengers have got a refund.” Matheran Toy Train to Get AC Coach from Saturday.
This comes after toy train services were suspended for nearly one and a half year following the May 2016 derailments, it was relaunched in January 2018. Meanwhile, a similar derailment took place in October near Aman Lodge station. Passenger safety activist had earlier alleged that problem in the system arises due to negligence and lack of maintenance of the toy train by railways.
