The people of Jammu and Kashmir is facing the heaviest snowfall in recent years. As per media reports, Srinagar recorded about 10 inches of snow on Saturday, January 5 morning. The situation is so severe that both surface, as well as aerial connectivity to the valley, is disrupted. A group of aspirants of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) Post Graduate (PG) from Kashmir division are stranded in Srinagar after the snowfall disrupted the air and road transport; just a day ahead of their scheduled exam in Jammu. The worried students are requesting the government to either cancel the examination or extend immediate help to save their year. The National Board of Examinations (NBE) is slated to host the most coveted NEET PG 2019 tomorrow, January 6. Due to limited capacity in the exam centres assigned to Kashmir, many candidates have been allotted centres in Jammu and other cities for the smooth conducting of the examination. But for the recent two consecutive days, snowfall has massively affected the air and road transport. Stating their plight, one of the aspirants was quoted in a Greater Kashmir report, “We request the government to either change our exam centre to Srinagar or arrange a special flight for us to Jammu. Considering the candidates’ plea, the Commissioner Secretary of Health and Medical Education, Atal Dulloo reported to look into the matter and that his department will “get on the job immediately.” He further assured all possible assistance to the stranded students of Kashmir and that they will make the needful arrangements on an urgent basis. For over two years, the medical aspirants have been appealing the government to increase the number and capacity of exam centres in Kashmir because of road condition, hefty airfare and unpredictable weather. But no initiative has been taken by the government yet.
