ND Tiwari Dies at 93: Uttarakhand Government Announces Three-Day State Mourning

During the mourning period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast in all govt offices throughout the state. According to a tweet by ANI, no official function will be organised in the state during the three-day mourning period.

Dehradun, October 18: Following the demise of Veteran Congress leader and former Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Narayan Datt Tiwari, the Uttarakhand Government has announced a three-day state mourning in the state. During the mourning period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast in all govt offices throughout the state. According to a tweet by ANI, no official function will be organised in the state during the three-day mourning period.

The Congress leader breathed his last at Max Hospital in Saket area in South Delhi on his 93rd birthday on Thursday. Tiwari, who was the only politician, who served as the Chief Minister of two states, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Max Hospital in July after kidney infection and multiple organ failure. Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Trivendra Singh Rawat paid homage to Tiwari. “I express sadness over the demise of former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh ND Tiwari. I pray that his soul rest in peace and God gives his family strength to overcome his loss,” Rawat tweeted.

Tiwari played important responsibilities like the country’s Finance Minister, Commerce Minister and External Affairs Minister. Born on October 18, 1925, Tiwari served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh thrice- from 1976-77, 1984-85, and then from 1988-89 and as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2002 till 2007. He was appointed as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh in 2007, a position that he continued till 2009. The veteran leader had worked as the Minister for External Affairs in 1986-1987 in the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s cabinet.
