NCRB 2018 Data: 50,74,634 Cognizable Crimes Registered, But Crime Rate Per Lakh Population Came Down in 2018
As per the data, theft is the most common crime committed in Delhi – of the 249,000 criminal cases filed by the state police in 2018, nearly 80 percent were related to theft.
New Delhi, January 9: According to the National Crime Records Bureau data, 50,74,634 cognizable crimes were registered in 2018. Though it shows an increase of 1.3 percent in the registration of cases over 2017 (50,07,044 cases), however, the crime rate per lakh population has come down from 388.6 in 2017 to 383.5 in 2018.
As per the data, theft is the most common crime committed in Delhi – of the 249,000 criminal cases filed by the state police in 2018, nearly 80 percent were related to theft. Another visible trend is that while the share of theft cases among crimes in Delhi has been increasing – from 43 percent in 2009 to nearly 80 percent in 2018, but the number of non-theft cases has shown a decreasing trend since 2015. According to a Hindustan Times report, the NCRB mentioned that certain states like Delhi and Uttar Pradesh have given people the means to register theft cases online. This may have increased crime reporting in these states. Talking about Odisha, the total rape count in the state has considerably reduced and it stood at 923 in 2018 vis-a-vis 2,070 in 2017.
