Hyderabad, October 12: Greyhound commandoes of Andhra Pradesh police killed a woman Naxal in an encounter near-Andhra-Odisha border on Friday morning. According to reports, the police have also captured four other Naxals including three women. The deceased Naxal has been identified as Gajarla Meena. The encounter took place in a forest close to Balimela near Odisha border.
Meena was named as one of the accused in the killing of Araku Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao and former MLA Siveri Soma. Rao and Soma were shot dead on September 23 by a group of Naxals from the Andhra-Odisha Border (AOB) Special Zonal Committee. “Around 10 Naxals are said to have fled into the forests. Four teams from the AP Greyhounds surrounded the militants during combing operations,” reported Hindustan Times quoting Visakhapatnam’s Superintendent of Police (Rural) P Rahul Deva as saying. The deceased Naxal was a member of the (AOB) Special Zonal Committee of the Naxals. Her husband, Udaya is from Telangana, and the security agencies suspected that he was present at the spot during the encounter. On October 3, Three Naxals were gunned down in an encounter with security forces in a dense forest in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, while one Naxal was arrested from the encounter site. Security forces had launched the operation after receiving specific inputs about the presence of Naxals in the area.
