Mumbai, September 6: A senior citizen woman and her son received Rs 5,000 as compensation from Canara Bank following an order from the Reserve Bank of India. The Canara Bank's Kopar Khairane branch had reportedly deducted Rs 60 from the senior citizen and her son's joint account for not maintaining the minimum balance. The RBI found that the bank cut the money from their bank account without informing them.

After the RBI order, not only did the bank pay Rs 5,000 as compensation but also returned the Rs 60, which they had deducted for not maintaining the minimum balance, reports Mid-day. Due to this. they did not receive any notifications about the money being deducted. According to the RBI rules, banks are required to inform customers before deducting any money from their bank account. Following RBI's direction on August 14, Gupta and her son, Anuj Kumar (35), received a compensation of Rs 5,000 for the deductions by the bank.

The bank had deducted Rs 60 from the mother-son's joint account as charges for not maintaining a minimum balance of Rs 1,000 in their bank account. In two separate transactions, Canara Bank deducted Rs 60 from the mother-son's account for not maintaining the minimum balance. After another visit, bank officials told her verbally that they would not refund the money as she had not availed of the SMS value-added services to receive transaction notifications. Later, the Guptas complained to the Canara Bank Circle Office at BKC, who said they would not receive a refund, and a few days later, the officer closed the case. This is when RBI intervened and awarded compensation.
