Mumbai, August 9: In a bizarre incident in Maharashtra, a 13-year-old girl from Ratnagiri's Rajapur accidentally swallowed a safety pin while removing her headscarf. The incident occurred on July 20. Soon after she swallowed the safety pin, her family members rushed her to a hospital on time. The teenager underwent a 50 minute procedure at a hospital in Kharghar where the doctors successfully removed the safety pin stuck in her lungs.

The teenager's unclde Asif Mujawar said that his niece returned returned from school on July 20, reports the Hindustan Times. While removing her scarf, the teenager placed the head of the safety pin in her mouth and accidentally swallowed the pin while hanging the scarf. In the beginning, doctors assumed that the pin was inside her stomach but the X-ray revealed the pin was stuck in her lungs. Doctors at the Ratnagiri hospital said that the process to retract the object would require advanced technology and expertise. They suggested the family to seek treatment elsewhere. While the family was suggested to go to Kolhapur, they went to Navi Mumbai after discussions with relatives in Mumbai.

A day later, the family arrived in Navi Mumbai's Kharghar where the admitted the girl was admitted to Medicover hospitals. An X-ray revealed that the safety pin was stuck in the left side of the lung. The doctors then took the teenager for emergency bronchoscopy. Dr Shahid Patel, consultant pulmonologist of the hospital said that the case was challenging as the pin was lodged in the lower part of the lung. He further said that the sharp end of the pin was embedded into the wall of the airways of the lung. "With a lot of patience, the pin was removed," he added. After the successful removal of the pin, the patient was discharged the same day.
