Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dedicated National Police Memorial (NPM) to the nation on Sunday on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day. The memorial is a tribute to police personnel who sacrificed their lives while on duty since independence.
New Delhi, October 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dedicated National Police Memorial (NPM) to the nation on Sunday on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day. The memorial is a tribute to police personnel who sacrificed their lives while on duty since independence. The Prime Minister lauded the efforts of police personnel in maintaining peace in the country. While speaking at the event, the PM said, "It is the day to remember every jawan who maintains law and peace in Jammu and Kashmir and fights against terrorism. Jawans on duty in Naxal-affected areas are doing a great service. It's also due to them that no. of Naxal affected districts are going down & youth is coming to the mainstream."
The National Police Day is being observed on October 21 every year to pay homage to 10 policemen killed in an ambush by Chinese troops in 1959 in Ladakh's Hot Spring area. The Prime Minister also inaugurated the museum dedicated to the Indian police. Home Minister Rajnath Singh and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader LK Advani were also present at the event.

The Prime Minister also honoured the survivors of the Hot Spring Incident at the event. As per the official statement, the 30-ft monolith erected on 6.12 acres in Chanakyapuri. The memorial represents all state and union territories' police forces as well as central police organisations of the country. Since Independence, 34,844 police personnel have been martyred, including 424 personnel losing their lives this year. Later in the day, PM Modi will hoist the national flag at Delhi’s Red Fort to mark the 75th anniversary of the formation of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's ‘Azad Hind Government’. Union Minister Mahesh Sharma and the Indian National Army (INA) veteran RS Chhikara will also be present at the event. PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone for a museum dedicated to the INA.
