Vellore, July 21: The life convict in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case -- Nalini Sriharan -- on Monday night allegedly attempt to commit suicide. Sriharan is currently lodged at the Special Prison for Women in Vellore and serving life-term imprisonment for last past 29 years.

According to various reports, the jail authorities came to know about the incident after a tiff with a co-prisoner on Monday night. Following this, prison authorities intervened, however, Sriharan threatened to end her life. Informing more about the incident, a prison authority said, as quoted by New Indian Express, "She had a tiff over the stay of a co-prisoner in the jail on Monday night. The prison officers had intervened. Yet, she threatened to commit suicide. But the issue was settled." Meanwhile, Sriharan's advocate P Pugazhendi had stated that her client tried to end her life by strangulating with a piece of cloth. He added that Nalini Sriharan tried to commit suicide in the presence of the jailer over the issue of the co-prisoner. He sought an inquiry into the incident. He said, "We want an inquiry into it as she never showed such an attitude during her 30-year incarceration. We request CM to move her to Puzhal prison. She isn't safe in Vellore prison."

As per details, Nalini Sriharan is the longest-serving woman prisoner behind the bars since 1991. Along with her, six other people -- including her husband Murugan -- were convicted by a special TADA court for their role in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on May 21, 1991. The former PM was killed in a human bomb attack during poll campaign in Sriperumbudur near Chennai.
