Muzaffarpur, October 4: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that is probing rape cases at Muzaffarpur shelter home on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that a skeleton of a 15-year-old girl was recovered from a cremation ground. The CBI found the skeleton after interrogating the main accused Brajesh Thakur's driver.
The human skeleton, believed to be remains of one of the girls of the shelter home, was found when CBI officials, along with Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, reached the cremation site on Wednesday. The government-funded shelter home was bring run by Brajesh Thakur's NGO Seva Sankalp Ewam Vikas Samiti (SSEVS). The sexual abuse of at least 34 girl inmates at the shelter home came to light during a social audit by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. An FIR was lodged against 11 people, including Thakur, on May 31. The probe was later taken over by the CBI. The Supreme Court last month decided to monitor the CBI probe in the case.
Bihar social welfare minister Manju Verma had to resign in August after it was disclosed that her husband had spoken to Thakur several times between January and June this year. The agency has frozen 20 bank accounts of Thakur, who has been lodged in the Muzaffarpur Central Jail since June 2. It has also arrested three staffers of Thakur.
Rosy Rani, who was responsible for carrying out inspection at the shelter homes, is being investigated for abetment under the POCSO Act. "The girls shared their ordeal with Rani but she didn't take any action," an official had said.
