Patna, August 5: The Bihar government has suspended six officials of a state child protection unit on Sunday over Muzaffarpur shelter home rapes. The assistant directors of Muzaffarpur, Munger, Araria, Madhubani, Bhagalpur and Bhojpur districts were suspended for not taking any action even after being informed about the alleged sexual abuse.

The action came a day after the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) held a protest at Jantar Mantar against the shelter home rapes. The protest was led by the former deputy chief minister of Bihar Tejashwi Yadav. He demanded the death penalty for the main accused Brajesh Thakur. The former deputy chief minister also alleged the Bihar government for protecting Thakur.

In a show of Unity, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, CPI leader D Raja, CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, former JDU leader Sharad Yadav also joined the protest. Gandhi asked the chief minister Nitish Kumar to take action against the culprits. Taking a dig at Kumar, the Congress president said, “We have gathered here for the women of our country, and we stand with them. If Nitish ji is really feeling ashamed then he should take immediate action.”

Kejriwal also slammed the Bihar government for its inaction against the people responsible for the heinous crime. He said that the state government had turned a blind eye towards the condition of the girls who were continuously harassed and assaulted at the shelter.

On Friday, the chief minister broke silence over the incident. He termed the incident as a matter of shame and also assured severe punishment for those who found guilty. On July 28, the police confirmed that 34 minor girls were raped inside the shelter home in Muzaffarpur. Initially, medical examinations of 42 girls revealed that 29 of them were raped. Later, the Bihar government handed the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
