New Delhi, April 19: In a shocking case reported from Delhi's Tihar Jail, a Muslim prisoner was allegedly burn-stamped with 'Om (ॐ)' by a Tihar jail superintendent. A Delhi court has called for an inquiry into the matter and asked for an explanation from the Director general of police (DGP), prison. According to the report, the incident took place on Wednesday. The prisoner, identified as Sabir, was lodged in a jail no-4 high-risk ward for supplying arms. Unlike other prisoners, Sabir was allowed to make calls to the family. Two days ago, he told his family about ill-treatment by jail officials. Sabir made serious allegations against the superintendent of jail no-4. He said that after the repeated complains about non-functioning induction cooker provided by the jail, in response to this, the superintendent called him to his office and threatened that, 'You complain so much and trying to become a leader here, Today, we will teach you a lesson.'
It is alleged that the Superintendent then beat Sabir and stuck heated metal rod to make five inches big "Om" symbol on his back. Cigarette burn marks were also seen on his back. Sabir also alleged that he was not given food for two days.
The magistrate has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. The court has asked to provide CCTV footages and statement by other jail inmates. On April 18, no reply was filed by Tihar administration, then the court fixed the next date of hearing on April 22.
