Meerut, April 5: A Muslim student from Uttar Pradesh's Meerut alleged she was harassed and molested by a group of students for not wearing Bharatiya Janata Party's cap during their college trip to Agra. In a series of tweets, the girl student said teachers and other girl students travelling with her watched the whole incident as mute spectators. After her tweets went viral, the college rusticated two students.
Narrating her ordeal, the victim tweeted, "Yesterday i went for a college trip to agra ...i was the only single muslim student out of the 55 students. We had 4 faculty members out of which 2 were male members ...the students got drunk that they started doing shitty things and they made me their target (sic)." "They bought some stuff like caps of bjp etc etc and they were forcing me to wear that when i refused them they started Misbehaving with me...they tried to touch me in an indecent manner and all that was happening in a bus with 2 male Teachers who were ignoring all such (sic)," she said in another tweet. The student accused faculty members present inside the bus of turning a blind eye towards what she was subjected to. "in the end i was the only "MUSLIM GIRL" . They didn't do this with any other girls even the girls were supporting them and ejoying it (sic)," she alleged. "There were four senior lecturers with the students on the trip. They didn't report about the incident. The victim, however, approached us with written complaint following which we have rusticated two students. The matter has been forwarded to internal grievance committee which will probe it," Sharma told a leading daily.
Reacting to the incident, senior Congress leader and former minister, Shashi Tharoor, slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "his new India". "If this is Modi’s “New India”, I want our “Old India” back!" Tharoor tweeted.
