Thane, Sep 11: Much to the happiness of motorists, the Mumbra bypass reopened on Monday after four months of repair work, bringing some relief to daily commuters from traffic congestion. The renovation work on the bypass was completed and was thrown open for public use on Monday. Reports inform that Guardian minister Eknath Shinde flagged-off the first vehicle on the renovated bypass on Monday after an inspection of the road. The repair work was initiated after the four-lane bypass had developed huge craters.
The bypass drew out a rush of heavy containers and trucks that choked roads leading to massive traffic snarls in the city during peak hours. As the construction work was going on the Mumbra bypass, truck drivers used internal routes to commute, thus leading to massive traffic jams. According to a report by TOI, DCP (traffic) Amit Kale informed that various truck associations have been alerted about the opening of the Mumbra bypass so that they don’t take the internal routes.
Reports inform that motorists driving to and from Thane and Navi Mumbai found the Eastern Express Highway, the Airoli road and the Thane-Belapur road free of heavy vehicles.
It must be noted that the Mumbra bypass, a six-km bypass built in 200, stretches through the Parsik hills and overlooks the Mumbra-Retibunder creek. The bypass is very crucial as it handles the heavy traffic flow to and from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust as also the cargo hubs in the Raigad district.
