Mumbai, July 24: After several instances of accidents due to overspeeding reported at JJ Flyover of South Mumbai in recent past, the Mumbai traffic police has fixed a speed limit of 50 kmph on the bridge to avert any further fatal incidents from taking place. Besides this, anyone found exceeding the speed limit will be penalised with a hefty fine of Rs 1000, said the officials. According to a news report in the Times of India, the new norm of speed restriction has been imposed from Tuesday itself and vehicles found speeding were issued challans by the traffic constables.
Ashok Dudhe, the traffic deputy commissioner of police (DCP) of South Mumbai division was quoted as saying, "The overall speed limit on the bridge is going to be 50 kmph while the speed limit on the curves will be 30 kmph. To keep on watch on speeding vehicles breaching the restricted limit speed cameras and speed guns have been installed. And anyone driving beyond the set limit will be challaned (receipt issued for violating the traffic rule)." Apart from this, the violators will be fined a sum of Rs 1000. As part of the existing rules, U-turns are not allowed on the said bridge and parking or halting on the bridge are prohibited.
A few drivers who were fined also took to social media and cautioned others to not over speed so as to avoid the fine money. A netizen Arvind Talsania took to Twitter and shared the picture of receipt he received from Mumbai traffic police for violating the traffic rule on July 24, yesterday. In his tweet, he mentioned that he was riding at a speed of 63 kmph and so he was fined.

The JJ Flyover is one of the most prominent bridges for vehicles coming from Sion, Matunga and Chembur areas towards South Mumbai. The total length of the bridge is 2. 5 kilometres and it was opened for public in the year 2002. Before the rule was implemented, the speed limit on the bridge was 40 to 60 kmph, where 40 kmph was restricted to the curves and 60 kmph to driving. Despite bikers being barred from taking the bridge, they continue to ride on the JJ Flyover, due to which several fatal accidents have been reported. Therefore, the traffic police deployed constables on the entry and exit points of the flyover to stall the bikers at these points itself.
