Mumbai Witnesses Another Chaotic Rainy Day With Andheri Bridge Collapse, Local Train Services Hit, Mira Road Station Fire, BEST Bus Accident And More

Another rainy day in Mumbai and the infrastructure of the city came crumbling down with waterlogging, a bridge collapse, a bus accident, a fire and more reported in the first half of the day on Tuesday.

Mumbai, July 3: Another rainy day in Mumbai and the infrastructure of the city came crumbling down with waterlogging, a bridge collapse, a bus accident, a fire and more reported in the first half of the day. Incessant rains have been lashing parts of Mumbai since Monday evening and continued to create chaos on Tuesday. The first eventuality reported was a part of the Gokhale bridge at Andheri railway station collapsing. (Live updates on Mumbai Rains today)

Andheri Bridge Collapse

A portion of Gokhale bridge collapsed this morning, leaving six people injured. The bridge connects Andheri East to Andheri West. The collapse resulted in Western Line and Harbour Line services getting affected. What followed was a blame game between the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Railways.

Vijay Khabale, Public Relations Officer, BMC, talking to news channel Times Now, said that the Western Railways is responsible for the bridge collapse and not the BMC as the part of the bridge that actually collapsed is with the Railways. On the other hand, the Western Railway PRO said that while the bridge came under the jurisdiction of the BMC, it was the railways that was carrying out a probe under it.

BEST, meanwhile, brought in 39 extra buses on Western line route from Bandra to Andheri to clear crowd due to Andheri bridge collapse. It also ran running 14 extra buses between Borivali and Churchgate.

Fire incidents and an accident

A fire was reported at Mira Road Railway Station at the new ticket counter area. According to TV reports, there was construction work going on at the new ticket counter. The fire was brought under control. In another such incident, a minor fire was reported from Kamala Mills due to a short circuit, which was brought under control.

Meanwhile, a BEST double-decker bus crashed into an overhead railing near Mumbai University in Kalina, leading to a huge traffic jam in the area.

Waterlogging in Many Areas And More

Waterlogging was reported in many areas due to to heavy rains. Mumbaikars took to Twitter to share images of waterlogging in Kurla, Sion, Hindmata, Andheri among other areas.

The dabbawalas had to suspend their services due to the bridge collapse and heavy rains. Several flight delays were also reported at the Mumbai airport even as airlines gave passengers a breather, saying they would passengers getting late due to traffic jams on other flights without charging extra.

Mumbaikars were all out venting their anger on the social media, saying how such is the story year after year and the city infrastructure comes crumbling down every monsoon.

More Rain Predicted

The weathermen have warned of more rainfall in the next 24 hours. Skymet and IMD said that heavy to very heavy rainfall was likely to continue in Mumbai this week.
