The victim, identified as 54-year-old Chandrakant Madre, is currently admitted to Vile Parle’s Cooper Hospital, where he is being treated for multiple fractures.
The accident was reported on Saturday morning, when Madre was involved in track maintenance work along with his team between Andheri and Jogeshwari railway stations. While the trespasser was keeping an eye on locals moving from one end, he was not observing the other end from where a Bandra-bound local was speeding in. Madre rushed towards the trespasser to warn him of the imminent threat. While the WR employee succeeded in saving his life, the train ended up smashing him.
Madre's 24-year-old son, who works with a private firm in Versova, said the man who was saved by his father did not even bother to check on his condition after the accident.
Seven of the gangman's colleagues, who were part of the track maintenance team, said Madre was rushed to the Andheri station, where the station master had arranged an ambulance.
Doctors treating the injured Railway employee said Madre has suffered from a day's memory loss as he could not remember what happened at the site of accident. His overall condition, they claimed, would improve over a period of two years due to his age.
