Mumbai, September 5: Mumbaikars are all set to welcome their beloved Ganpati Bappa on Saturday, September 7 on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi 2024. Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is a vibrant Hindu festival celebrated widely to honour Lord Ganesha, the deity of wisdom, prosperity, and new beginnings. The annual 10-day Ganesh Utsav begins in Maharashtra on Saturday. Mumbai will be celebrating Lord Ganesha's birthday on a wet note this year as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rainfall on September 7.
According to the IMD, moderate rainfall is very likely to occur at most places in Konkan and Goa. Mumbai and adjoining areas - Thane, Palghar, Navi Mumbai - are expected to witness heavy rainfall at isolated places. Apart from Mumbai region, the rest of Maharashtra is also set to witness recurring rainfall. According to the weather office, moderate rainfall is very likely on many places over South Madhya Maharashtra, and at a few places over North Madhya Maharashtra. Light rainfall very likely to occur at a few places over Marathwada, the IMD said in its weather bulletin. Skymet Weather said Mumbai is expected to experience a day with temperatures hovering around 28°C. The humidity level will be quite high at 83%, which is typical for this time of year in Mumbai. Winds will be blowing at a speed of 22 kmph, providing some relief from the humidity. As per the weather services, rain showers could be brief but intense in Mumbai on September 7.

In a bid to facilitate smoother travel for Lord Ganesha devotees during Ganesh Chaturthi 2024, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has declared a toll waiver for those traveling to Konkan for the festival. The toll exemption will be effective from September 5 to September 19, 2024, as per an official statement released on Wednesday, September 4. The decision, directed by CM Shinde, will apply to toll booths on major highways, including the Mumbai-Bengaluru National Highway and the Mumbai-Goa National Highway. Additionally, roads managed by the Public Works Department will also be covered under this waiver.
