Mumbai Water Cut News Update: Water Levels at Lakes Fall Short, Supply May Be Disrupted if Stock Not Filled by October 1
The residents might face a Mumbai Water Cut if the water levels in the seven lakes that provide water do not reach 100% capacity by October 1.
Mumbai, September 3: The residents might face a Mumbai Water Cut if the water levels in the seven lakes that provide water do not reach 100% capacity by October 1. This is because the recent weak monsoon in August did not significantly increase the water stock in these lakes, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials. Hence, if the water levels in seven lakes are not fulfilled by October 1, the city may suffer water cuts.
Every year, on October 1, when the monsoon season ends, BMC officials review how much water is in the lakes. Senior officials from the city's hydraulic department mentioned that if they discover the lakes are not filled enough, they might decide to implement water restrictions. This ensures enough water to meet the city's needs until the next monsoon season begins. Mumbai Car Accident: Former BJP MLA’s Son Rams His Lamborghini Into Railing of Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Booked.
Currently, the lakes have about 90.65% of their total water capacity. Officials have pointed out that this 90% level will only be enough to provide water until May next year. However, when the lakes are completely full at 100%, they can supply the city with water until at least June 15. Mumbai relies on water from seven different lakes, namely Tansa, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Tulsi, Vihar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna, for daily water needs. On Saturday morning, the water levels in all the lakes were at 90.65%, but on the same day last year, they were at 97.81%. In 2021, during the same period, the water levels reached 90.22%. On June 30, the water levels in the lakes' catchment area had dropped to 10.88%, leading BMC to implement a 10% water reduction in the city starting from July 1. The Mumbai water cut was revoked on August 8 after the lake levels crossed 80%.
