Mumbai, October 16: Acute water crisis has hit several parts of South Mumbai. Residents of areas like Colaba, Cuffe Parade and Churchgate took out a march on Monday against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) protesting against erratic supply of water in their areas. These areas have reportedly been worst hit. Residents say that the water supply has been irregular and deficit. Residents complained that the pressure of water has also reduced drastically. According to reports, the hydraulic department of the BMC had undertaken work to connect surface level pipelines with the tunnel between Powai and Veravali section in the last week of September. It was during this work that the supply got his in both Western as well as South Mumbai. While Western areas faced some disturbances, South Mumbai continues to face acute shortage of water.
The PWD office had reportedly written to the BMC after water supply was hit at a minister's residence. reports say the PWD office had asked for a supply of 8-9 tankers of water per day to the minister's house as water crisis hit South Mumbai.
This year, with less than normal monsoon, the lakes in Mumbai received 95 per cent water. However, there has been no formal announcement of a water supply cut by the BMC yet.
