Mumbai, January 8: In the last four years, Mumbai Railways witnessed the least accidental deaths. According to a Times of India report, nearly 2,700 commuters were killed last year, which is 19 percent lower than the fatalities recorded in 2015. In 2019, 89 percent of the casualties were men and crossing tracks was the biggest killer.
More than 1,400 commuters were killed while trying to cross railway tracks. Around 600 people died after falling from locals last year. Kalyan GRP post recorded 331 deaths, which is the highest. On Western Railway, Borivli post recorded 241 casualties. With the construction of more foot-over-bridges, trespassing deaths have reduced. In addition to this, reducing the gap between the platform and the rakes helps to reduce accidents. Among the casualties recorded last year, 24 percent were killed in such a condition that they couldn't be identified.
