Mumbai Traffic Rises by 109% in a Decade While Road Length Remains Consistent
The rise in people purchasing cars has been on the back of an increase in purchasing power of the 25-35 years age group, easier loans, lower car price and better aspiration among the people.
Mumbai, December 27: In the last decade, Mumbai traffic has more than doubled, but the city's road length remained consistent at about 2,000 km. According to a Times of India report, there has been almost a 109 percent rise in vehicles from 2009-10 to 2019. There are 1,110 bikes for every kilometre and 150 new cars and SUVs are coming to the roads daily.
The rise in people purchasing cars has been on the back of an increase in purchasing power of the 25-35 years age group, easier loans, lower car price and better aspiration among the people. Motorcycles guarantee quick mobility and come useful for running small errands and loans also come cheaper for them. That is the reason over the last decade, almost 10 lakh motorcycle and scooters have flooded the streets of Mumbai. While, there was a boom in personal vehicles, but on the other hand Mumbai also witnessed a downsizing of BEST services and inadequate trains. Transport experts are of the opinions that the government needs to impose congestion tax in the business hubs and promote the use of zero-emission electric vehicles.
