Mumbai, November 13: The Traffic Police has banned the entry of light and medium commercial vehicles, including three-tyred tempos, on the Western Express Highway from 5pm-9pm. The move is aimed at facilitating traffic movement on the busy roadway -- which has seen serpentine traffic snarls since the Metro construction work gains pace.

The restriction has, however, been imposed on northbound arm of the highway. The transporters will be allowed to ply the LCV/MCVs on south-bound section of the WEH. Private Vehicle Won't be Allowed on Delhi Roads if Air Quality Gets Worse, Warns Pollution Control Board.

Ambulances, police vehicle and other government and semi-government vehicles would be allowed to commute on both arms of the highway.

According to motorists, the move will yield little success until the police rigorously enforces it. They claim that the traffic snarls would only end when the section of metro construction, cutting across highways, is completed. "Till the roads will be dug up, the highways will remain shrunk. With space halved, you cannot expect half of the vehicles to also disappear," said Malad-resident Afzal Khan.

Earlier this year, the traffic department had prohibited movement of heavy vehicles and private buses south Mumbai region from 7am to midnight, citing the round-the-clock traffic logjam in the business hub.

The Eastern Freeway, which connects Chembur to Dockyard Road, prohibits the entry of heavy vehicles for all 24 hours. The belt has reduced commutation time between Chembur to Wadi Bandar by around 30 minutes.
