Mumbai: Three Police Personnel to Face Criminal Trial For Allegedly Forcing Minor to Marry Her Rapist

Mumbai, May 16: Three Mumbai police personnel will face criminal trial for allegedly forcing a minor gangrape victim to marry her rapist in 2013. A special court on Wednesday approved an application to question the three Mumbai police personnel in connection with the case. Special Judge Madhuri H More allowed the application. She directed that summons be issued against Senior Inspector Jaywant Shinde, Inspector Vivek Shende and Constable M A Bhosle. The application was filed through lawyer Wesley Menezes, after the victim was desposed in court in February. In the court, she narrated how she was coerced by the officers to marry the accused against her will. The victim’s family also file a writ petition before the Bombay High Court and a special team was formed to investigate the case, reported India Today. As per reports, the three will face trial under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for failure to report the commission of a sexual offence.

The prosecution had claimed that the minor was gangraped inside a general store by two men in 2012. After committing the crime, she was threatened not to tell anybody. In 2013, after her parents realised that she was eight months pregnant, an FIR was registered against the accused. The girl in her statement alleged that the police personnel coerced her to marry one of the accused.
