Mumbai: Three, Including Toddler, Fall in Well During Jitiya Puja, Die of Drowning

The incident took place around 6:30 pm when they were performing a Jitiya Puja at the edge of the well on Dikshit Road.

Mumbai, October 2: At least three people, including a toddler, died of drowning after falling into a well in suburban Vile Parle in Mumbai on Tuesday. The incident took place around 6:30 pm when they were performing a Jitiya Puja at the edge of the well on Dikshit Road. The death toll may rise as some others were also performing the religious ritual.

The deceased have been identified as Madhavi Pandey (49), Divya (3), and Renu Yadav (20). Some women were performing a puja sitting on the iron grill on the mouth of a 30-feet deep well. The grill suddenly gave in, and the women fell into the well, a fire brigade official told news agency PTI. Fire brigade officials managed to rescue a five-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl.

The bodies of deceased were taken to VN Desai Hospital at Santacruz East. A rescue operation was underway by officials of fire brigade. Police personnel were also present at the spot.
