Mumbai, September 5: In a shocking incident in Mumbai's neighbouring Thane, a man who took a loan to help his friend reportedly died by suicide after his friend defaulted on repayment. The victim, a resident of Bhayander, had allegedly mortgaged his flat to avail of a loan of Rs 25 lakh, Police officials said the victim took the loan to help his best friend overcome the financial crisis. However, when his friend defaulted on repayment, the victim committed suicide.

After the incident came to light, the Navghar police on Saturday arrested the accused "friend" for "abetment to suicide", reports the Times of India. The deceased has been identified as Giridhar Solanki (58). A police official said that in 2015, Solanki had mortgaged his flat in Bhayander (east) to a bank to avail Rs 25 lakh loan. After his death, Solanki's family told cops that Galate had convinced Solanki to take the loan. The accused has even promised to repay the loan on time. However, cops said that Galate paid only five instalments and later stopped taking Solanki’s calls. As Solanki could not repay the instalments, he started receiving notices from the bank.

Solanki forwarded the notices to Galate, who allegedly refused to entertain it. On August 10, Solanki received a final notice from the bank informing him that the flat where he stayed with his family would be seized. Solanki, who was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai, succumbed to his injuries on August 25. After the incident, the Agripada police registered an accidental death report in connection with the incident. Acting on a complaint, the police arrested Galate on Saturday and remanded him to police custody.
