New Delhi, June 29: In a bizarre incident, a woman in Mumbai was killed by her brother-in-law after a tiff over water on Friday. The husband of the victim informed the police that the tragic incident took place when the man, his brother) fetched water from a public tank in Khar west area and got into an argument with his wife over water sharing. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the woman, identified as Namita Pokhare was attacked by her brother-in-law by a sickle after the tussle. The report further informs that the accused has been arrested after an FIR was lodged under 302, 37(1) (A) and 135 sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) of Maharashtra police act. Parts of Mumbai have been facing severe water crisis this year while several districts in Maharashtra are reeling under severe drought, with many villagers totally dependent on water tankers. Several villages have been receiving water tankers once in three days. Small towns and villages having no access to potable water leading to fights among themselves. Few drought-hit regions in the state faced water crisis as the groundwater depleted. Last year in October, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had informed that around 180 talukas in Maharashtra are facing a drought-like situation. After a bad monsoon, the government declared drought in 151 of 358 tehsils in the state last October.
In the wake of the water shortage in the state, the Water Conservation Department had initiated 'Jalyukt Shivar' program for water conservation. Some of the measures that were taken included drilling of new borewells, special repairs to pipe water supply schemes, well deepening and de-silting and providing water through tankers and bullock carts.
