Mumbai, May 31: A 40-year-old man who is a hawker by profession was arrested on Thursday after he raped his minor daughter over several months and impregnated her in Mumbai. He was arrested by the cops while trying to flee.

According to police reports, the man had recently been released from jail in November last year. The girl remained silent for several months, fearing her father's threats. However, she eventually confided in a neighbor about her stopped menstrual cycle and persistent stomach pains. Concerned for her well-being, the neighbor took her to a government hospital, where doctors discovered that she was already seven months pregnant.

The hospital promptly informed the police, leading to the recording of the girl's statement and the registration of an offense against her father. The man now faces charges under section 376(2)(n) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (punishment for rape) and sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).

The accused, a hawker by profession, attempted to flee but was apprehended by police teams. The family resides in slums, and the girl is currently admitted to the hospital, where her condition remains stable.
