Mumbai, December 3: The Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police has arrested a 45-year-old Santa Cruz woman and her lover for allegedly killing her husband by spiking his food with poisons over a period of time. The accused has been identified as Kajal Shah and Hitesh Jain. Police said Kajal and Hitesh allegedly wanted to usurp her husband Kamalkant Shah’s property and she had enquired with insurance agencies about her husband's policies.

Kamalkant died of a prolonged illness on Sep 19. Police said Kajal had been administering arsenic and thallium, both poisons, in the meals of Kamalkant who was admitted to an Andheri hospital in September after he fell sick. The hospital authority had informed the Santacruz police, who recorded the statement of Shah’s sister Kavita Lalwani. Shah’s sister suspected foul play in his death, reported Hindustan Times.

Sarla, the mother of the deceased, died on August 13 due to the same symptoms. Kamalkant and Hitesh ran garment businesses and were friends. Hitesh used to visit Shah's house often and thus came in contact with Kajal. The police learnt relations between Shah and his wife Kajal were not cordial. In 2021, Shah questioned Kajal over her phone calls with Jain.
