Mumbai, September 26: In a shocking incident that took place in Mumbai, a 30-year-old man, who was booked in an Arms Act case, allegedly fled the Cuffe Parade police station after seeking permission to drink water. After running away from police custody, the accused ran and hid near a metro construction site. The accused has been identified as Gulam Mustafa Shaikh.
Soon, cops chased the accused, who pulled out a knife and stabbed himself and a police-sub-inspector who had come to catch him. According to a report in the Hindustan Times, Shaikh, who has been booked in an Arms Act case, was summoned to the police station in connection with the case. "We traced him to a Metro train godown near the World Trade Centre. When our team went there, he removed a dagger and a blade," an officer said. The officer also said that Shaikh first started stabbing himself; however, when cops asked him to drop his weapon, he threatened them and went on to attack a sub-inspector. SI Rupesh Bhagwat was slashed several times in his arms.
Police officials rushed Shaikh to GT Hospital for treatment, post which he was shifted to JJ Hospital. Meanwhile, Bhagwat was treated at GT Hospital and discharged later. Cops said that they would arrest Shaikh after he is discharged from the hospital. "He was under the influence of drugs when he fled and attacked police teams," a police official said. Meanwhile, Shaikh has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). In a separate incident, an unknown assailant allegedly stabbed a dumper driver to death in the Durgadi Chowk area of Kalyan West. After the incident came to light, cops have launched a manhunt to nab the accused and are scanning the CCTV footage of the area.
