Mumbai, November 12: A chilling discovery was made on Monday when five dogs were found dead in a gutter in Mumbai's Kandivali. The bodies of the dogs were found floating in a nullah near Mangalmayi Building, Sainagar, Kandivali (West). The carcasses of the canines, believed to have been strangled and abandoned, were spotted by local resident Heena Limbachiya (50), who alerted society chairman Ashish Busa. Busa, in turn, notified civic authorities and local volunteers who later buried the animals.
According to a report published by Mid-Day report, the dogs were strays that were commonly fed by residents in the area. They had been found wrapped in plastic bags, their mouths tied and appeared to have been thrown into the gutter, where they likely drowned. "The dogs were familiar to us, and we regularly fed them. Their deaths are deeply troubling," said Busa, who filed the complaint with the police. He suspects drug addicts may be behind the brutal act. The case has been registered under Section 325 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), related to causing harm to animals, and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Local residents also reported that other stray dogs from the vicinity have gone missing recently. However, no formal complaints have been filed about these disappearances as of yet. Mumbai: Stray Dog Dies After Being Hit and Dragged Under Car in Antop Hill, Disturbing Video Surfaces.
In a related development, two more dog carcasses were found in a nearby nullah (drain) on Monday, November 11. According to Roshan Pathak, vice-president of the Human Rights Commission Maharashtra and legal adviser to the PAL Animal Foundation, there are suspicions that up to 13 or 14 dogs may have been killed in the area and discarded in the waterway. The two recovered bodies were sent for a post-mortem examination.
