Mumbai, July 29: With torrential rains lashing the city this month, Mumbai has recorded the highest July rain in five years, reports said. The heavy rainfall triggered flood-like situations in several parts of the city, leading to waterlogging and massive traffic congestion. According to a report by TOI, Mumbai received 1,268.4 mm received this month till now, which is just short of the 1,468.5 mm rainfall it got in the July 2014 deluge. The total rainfall recorded till now by the Colaba and Santacruz observatories this month is 260 mm and 619 mm above normal. The report further stated that the maximum quantum of the total rain recorded so far in July was received between July 1-2, when 375.2 mm was recorded over 24 hours. Another intense spell was witnessed on July 26-27, when 219.2 mm was recorded. On July 20, rainfall exceeded the average for the month, which is 840 mm. On Friday, the metropolis was hit by incessant rains while coastal districts, many towns were practically underwater since then as flooding local rivers and other water bodies overflowed into residential areas. Among the worst-hit in Mumbai were Thane and Ratnagiri with towns of Ulhasnagar, Murbad, Badlapur, Tiwala, Vangani, Khed, Mangaon, Mandangad, Chiplun and surroundings practically submerged.
