The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) shared a few tips today, July 22. The civic body asked people to avoid parking vehicles or standing under trees during thunderstorms. The civic body also asked citizens to avoid walking in stagnant rainwater, as it can harbour diseases like leptospirosis.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in Mumbai city and suburbs on Tuesday, July 22. The weather agency also said that very heavy rainfall is possible at isolated places with occasional gusty winds reaching 45-55 kmph.
Mumbai is set to experience moderate to heavy showers intermittently over the next 2-3 hours. While the frequency of these showers is expected to be less than before, the rain is far from over. More rainfall is anticipated throughout the week.
Many areas of Mumbai reported heavy rains in the past 24 hours. The maximum rain was recorded in Trombay (241 mm), followed by Wadala (223 mm), Ghatkopar (215 mm), Worli (204 mm), Sewri (203 mm), BKC (199 mm).
Heavy Rainfall Reported in Many Areas in Past 24 Hours
The BMC has provided an update on water levels in Mumbai's seven lakes. As per the BMC report, the Bhatsa Lake has allocated 575,700 ML for MCGM usage, while the Upper Vaitarna's release has been halted since July 1, and the Middle Vaitarna's gate was closed on July 8. Additionally, the Maharashtra Government has sanctioned carryover content of 137,000 ML from Bhatsa and 91,130 ML from Upper Vaitarna. Bhandup Complex received 173 mm of rain today, bringing the total to 1,883 mm, and Tulsi Lake began overflowing on July 20.
According to the BMC, Mumbai will experience a high tide of 4.59 meters at 12:50 PM today, July 22. The low tide will occur at 6:57 PM, measuring 1.55 meters.
South and Central Mumbai are expected to experience very heavy rains in the coming hours, with the suburbs set to follow shortly. The IMD forecasts moderate rain at isolated locations across Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Thane, and the Ghats of Satara within the next three hours.
As per an update provided by the Central Railways on July 22, trains on the Main, Harbour, Trans-Harbour, and 4th Corridor lines are operating normally as of 8 AM. This comes amid the IMD's forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the city and suburbs. Passengers are advised to stay updated with any further changes in schedules.
Local trains are running normally on the Western Line in Mumbai, said the Western Railway on Monday, July 22. The city is likely to receive heavy rainfall today.

Mumbai, July 22: Mumbai and its suburbs are expected to see another rainy day on Monday, July 22. The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai, predicting heavy rainfall at isolated places. Neighbouring areas like Thane, Kalyan and Navi Mumbai are also likely to witness downpour. Heavy rainfall battered Mumbai and its neighbouring areas on Sunday, July 21, disrupting flight operations and causing waterlogging in several areas. Officials said Mumbai city recorded 100 mm of rainfall in ten hours between 8 AM and 6 PM, whereas the eastern and western suburbs received rainfall of 118 mm and 110 mm, respectively. The Mumbai traffic police closed the Andheri, Khar and Maharashtra Nagar subways in the city due to waterlogging.
The police also issued traffic diversions and alternate routes due to the closures of the city's subways. The heavy downpour also affected flight operations in Mumbai. According to reports, a total of 36 flights were cancelled, with 15 flights diverted to nearby airports, mainly Ahmedabad, till 4 PM. It is also reported that runway operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) were suspended twice for a brief period due to incessant rainfall and low visibility
Besides, the BEST diverted a few buses due to flooding in several parts of the city. Several vehicles were stranded on inundated roads in areas such as Wadala, Dadar, Andheri, Matunga, and Malad, among others. In view of the orange alert issued by IMD for Mumbai, the police issued an advisory and asked citizens to avoid going out in coastal areas. Meanwhile, the weather agency has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai for today, forecasting heavy rainfall at isolated places in the city.
