Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours on Monday, leading to waterlogging in many parts of the city. Heavy rain in Mumbai on Sunday caused waterlogging, long traffic jams, and disruptions to local train services and flight operations. The downpours, which included heavy overnight showers, are expected to continue this week.
Heavy rains in Mumbai have disrupted road, rail, and air traffic. Operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport have been temporarily suspended amid heavy rains, leading to several flights being diverted and over 50 being cancelled. Mumbai's lifeline remains suspended on several routes after incessant downpours in the state of Maharashtra. Local train services between Kasara and Titwala stations in Thane district, which adjoins Mumbai, were suspended on Sunday morning after a tree fell on the tracks following the heavy rains.
In response to heavy rainfall, all primary, secondary and higher secondary schools and colleges in Mumbai Metropolis will remain closed on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. As heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Monday morning, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde chaired a high-level meeting to review the situation in the state. He also directed all emergency agencies to be on high alert. In a message on social media platform X, CM Shinde said that life has been disrupted in Mumbai due to heavy rains, saying, “There is a traffic jam on the roads and the traffic on the railway line has also been affected. The work of removing water from the track is going on by the railway administration and efforts are on to restore the traffic soon.” “I have directed all emergency agencies to be on high alert. Citizens should go out only if necessary. I am also appealing to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Police Administration and Emergency Services to cooperate,” CM Shinde added in his post.
