Commuters on Sion-Panvel highway, travelling to or through Kharghar-Belapur patch, are likely to spend 45 minutes extra on the road, as per the current Google Map estimates, since the traffic has failed to recede. As four-wheelers are taking the alternative route through the adjacent neighbourhood of CBD, heavy traffic has been reported in the residential area as well.

Mumbai, July 16: Incessant rainfall lashed the Mumbai metropolitan region overnight on Sunday till Monday morning, which sparked fear among the city residents whether their commutation to work on Monday morning would be marred by traffic triggered by water-logged roads, along with a delay in the local train services due to the downpour. The regional unit of India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy spells of rainfall at isolated junctures, along with intermittent rainfall for the next 48 hours. However, no alert was issued till the last night. Schools and colleges were scheduled to function.
Meanwhile, an alert was issued in Kerala on Sunday, with State Disaster Response Force deployed in seven districts - Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Thrissur. All educational institutions were ordered to remain closed today.
The weather system created in Kerala, due to the low-pressure over Bay of Bengal, may give further impetus to rainfall along the coastline of Goa and Maharashtra.
In neighbouring parts of Mumbai - Palghar, Thane and Raigad, rainfall has been intense over the last 48 hours. In Thane, 66 per cent of the rainfall as compared to the previous year has already been recorded.
