Mumbai Rains: IMD Red Alert in Maximum City Today, Holiday Declared in All Schools And Junior Colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Konkan Region
In view of the MeT department alert, all schools and junior colleges in the alert-sounded have been ordered to remain shut by the state government. District Magistrates in other parts of Maharashtra, where the IMD alert is not issued, can take the call on shutting educational institutions based on the quantum of rainfall, tweeted Ashish Shelar.
Mumbai, September 19: On account of the red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Mumbai and adjoining regions for Thursday, all schools and junior colleges in the alert-sounded have been ordered to remain shut by the state government. District Magistrates in other parts of Maharashtra, where the IMD alert has not been issued, can take the call on shutting educational institutions based on the quantum of rainfall, said Education Minister Ashish Shelar in a statement issued at midnight on Twitter. Mumbai and its suburban region have been reeling under high rainfall throughout the month of September so far. The downpour led to traffic jams on several arterial routes and delay in the functioning of Mumbai locals' harbour and trans harbour links. India Meteorological Department, Mumbai, warned of thunderstorm accompanied by intense spells of rain likely to occur in the districts of Thane and Palghar on Thursday, September 19. Mumbai has already seen one of the wettest September months ever. The city has already received 789mm rainfall in the first nine days of the month.
According to a Times of India report, this is the highest September rain since 1994, when the city recorded 904.6mm in the entire month. Last year, on the other hand, the city recorded only 73mm rain for September, which was the lowest in the last 27 years. This year due to the torrential rains that lashed Mumbai, the city has recorded a total of 3,342.9mm of rainfall. The September rainfall is a result of not only very heavy rainfall that occurred but due to continuous rains.
