Mumbai Rains: IMD Issues Red Alert for Thursday, Heavy Rainfall to Lash City Over Next 24 Hours
In its weather bulletin, the IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall on Thursday at isolated places over Vidarbha, Konkan, Goa, Telangana, Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to receive heavy downpour throughout the day.
Mumbai, September 18: Heavy rainfall is expected to lash Mumbai and its adjoining areas for the next few days from Thursday, the Met department ha said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and Thane for Thursday with forecast of 'heavy to very heavy' rain across the city and suburbs. In its weather bulletin, the IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall on Thursday at isolated places over Vidarbha, Konkan, Goa, Telangana, Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to receive heavy downpour throughout the day. Issuing a red alert for Maharashtra, the IMD said that on Wednesday, fairly widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy falls at isolated places across the state. The IMD said the torrential rains in the region will be caused due to a cyclonic circulation which is likely to develop into a low pressure area over westcentral Bay of Bengal & adjoining areas of Coastal Andhra Pradesh during next 24 hours and is likely to move west-northwestwards during next 3-4 days.
Under the above situation, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls likely over Maharashtra and its adjoining areas on September 18 and 19. According to a data by the IMD, Mumbai is only 6.3 mm short of surpassing the highest ever September rainfall record. The data reveals that the Mumbai has recorded 913.7 mm rainfall from September 1 to 8.30 am on September 17. The all-time record for the month is 920 mm recorded in 1954. The average rainfall for the month is 327.1 mm.
