Mumbai Rains: IMD Issues Red Alert for Sunday, Central Railway Cancels 5 Trains, Diverts 6 Due to Heavy Rainfall
The city and its suburbs, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Pune have received rainfall in excess of the normal average between June 1 and July 27. The IMD has issued a 'Red Alert' for Palghar, Thane and Raigad districts for July 27-28, Ratnagiri district for July 27 and Mumbai for July 28.
Mumbai, July 28: Mumbai will have to brace for intense spells of rains in the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department has predicted. The weather agency said, 'heavy to very heavy' rainfall are expected over few places in Mumbai till Monday. The city and its suburbs, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Pune have received rainfall in excess of the normal average between June 1 and July 27. On Saturday, the IMD had issued a 'red alert' for Palghar, Thane and Raigad districts for July 27-28, Ratnagiri district for July 27 and Mumbai for July 28. It must be noted that when a red alert is sounded, it denotes likelihood of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. On Sunday, the Central Railways cancelled five trains while six were diverted in Mumbai due to heavy rain and flooding of tracks in some areas, the Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway (CR) said. The red alert in the city and its suburbs comes a day after a passenger train, Mahalaxmi Express, got stuck in water on an open ground between Badlapur and Vangani. Meanwhile, areas including Ambernath, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar were flooded as Ulhas river breached its banks.

In its weather bulletin, the IMD said the city is likely to receive heavy showers due to the strengthening of monsoon currents and the formation of a low-pressure area over North West Bay of Bengal. Due to the change in weather conditions, the rainfall intensity is very likely to increase over North Konkan during next 48 hours.
The IMD in its forecast said that on Sunday and Monday, the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 29 degree Celsius and 24 degree Celsius, respectively. It added saying that the widespread rainfall across Maharashtra, will benefit Marathwada and Vidarbha, both drought-hit regions of the state.
