Mumbai Rains: Fourth Lake Tansa Also Overflows, Mumbaikars May Have Sufficient Water This Year
If the catchment areas of lakes continue to receive good rainfall, then the other lakes will also cross their water stock level soon. So, the woes of Mumbaikars for water will end as there will be sufficient stock to provide uninterrupted water supply.
Mumbai, July 17: Good news for Mumbaikars! Lake Tansa, one out of the seven supplying water to Mumbai city, has reached the highest water stock level mark and has been overflowing from 6:15 am onwards on Tuesday morning. Before Tansa, three other lakes - Modak Sagar, Tulsi, and Vihar started overflowing after the city recorded a good amount of rainfall from past one week.
As reported earlier Vihar lake which fulfils 10 percent water requirement of the island city, started to overflow on Monday from 10:30 am onwards. While the other two lakes Tulsi, one of the smallest lake among seven, also crossed the highest water stock level on July 9 and Modak Sagar on July 15.
Seven lakes -- Tulsi, Vihar, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Bhatsa and Modak Sagar -- supply water to Mumbai. Every day, only 3,800 million litres of water is supplied to the city as against the requirement of 4,300 million litres. Besides this, Mumbai has the largest water network in the world and second largest in Asian.
In addition, to meet the 4,300 million litre water demand, the civic body has proposed to build two more dams -Gargai and Pinjal. A budgetary provision for the same is being done in the civic budget 2018-19. Moreover, the civic body is also working on projects like providing 24x7 water supply to Mumbai.
The civic body officers believe that since the four major lakes are reported to be overflowing in the second month of July, the city won't face water cuts. They said that if the catchment areas of lakes continue to receive good rainfall, then the other lakes will also cross their water stock level soon. So, the woes of Mumbaikars for water will end as there will be sufficient stock to provide uninterrupted water supply in the city.
