Mumbai Rains Forecast: Heavy Rainfall to Lash City on Weekend, IMD Issues Warning

The IMD’s Santacruz weather station in suburbs recorded 43.4 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours ended 8.30 am on Friday. Meanwhile, during the same period, the department’s weather station at Colaba in South Mumbai recorded 21.2 mm rainfall.

Mumbai, August 2: Mumbai will have to brace for heavy rainfall this weekend due to low pressure area over the Bay, the weather department said. In its weather bulletin, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said that Mumbai is very likely to receive intense heavy rainfalls on Saturday and Sunday. In the wake of the weather conditions, warnings have been issued across the city including the west coast. "With the development of low pressure area over Bay, this Saturday night and Sunday, Mumbai is very likely to get intense heavy rainfalls. The IMD’s Santacruz weather station in suburbs recorded 43.4 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours ended 8.30 am on Friday. Meanwhile, during the same period, the department’s weather station at Colaba in South Mumbai recorded 21.2 mm rainfall. On Thursday, Vehar lake, one of the seven reservoirs supplying water to Mumbai, has started overflowing after heavy rains in the last few days, the BMC said. This is the fourth lake to overflow, after Tulsi, Tansa and Modak Sagar.

According to IMD, Warnings are issued (for areas) including West coast. K S Hosalikar, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, India Met Department, Mumbai, tweeted saying, “With the development of low pressure area over Bay, this Saturday night and Sunday, Mumbai is very likely to get intense heavy rainfalls.”

The total water storage capacity of Mumbai's lakes is 14.47 lakh million litres. According to officials, with torrential rains lashing the city since the last few weeks, the total stock in the seven lakes has gone up to nearly 87 per cent. Reports inform that significant rainfall in July had led to Tansa and Modak Sagar overflowing on July 25 and 26 respectively.
