Mumbai, July 2: The onset of Southwest Monsoon in Mumbai has been late, but strongest ever in the last decade with over 982.2 mm rainfall recorded in the maximum city between June 1 to July 2. The quantum of downpour is nearly 411.2 mm excess of the long-time average rainfall recorded in the same period.

Over one-third of the rainfall recorded in the last 30 days were witnessed in the past 24 hours. Between Monday 8 am to Tuesday 8 am, 375.2 mm of rainfall has been recorded, which is nearly 47 per cent of the average rains in July (840.7 mm). Mumbai Rains: BMC Declares Public Holiday, All Offices, Schools and Colleges to Remain Shut

The last time Mumbai received higher than this level of rainfall in a single day dates back to 1975. The second-highest rains in 24-hour period was then recorded on July 26, 2005 -- when 944 mm rainfall was witnessed in a single day.

Between July 1 and July 2 (till 8am), the maximum rainfall has been recorded in Kandivali (455 mm), followed by Goregaon (412 mm) and Malad (447.54 mm).

Mumbai Rains: Below Are Locality-Wise Rainfall Data

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) website, 607mm of rainfall has been recorded from June 1 to July 1 (8:30 am). The MeT department has not published the quantum of rainfall received in the last 24 hours, but officials have indicated that the amount has exceeded 350 mm.

Private weather agency Skymet has warned of "flood-like" situation between July 3 to July 5 in Mumbai, claiming that the city will receive 200 mm or more rainfall per day during the period.

So far, 21 fatalities have been recorded in Mumbai in the last 24 hours. 18 died in Malad after wall of a building collapsed, whereas, 3 others succumbed to injuries in a similar accident in Kalyan.
