Mumbai Rains: Cyclone Vayu to Affect Megacity Slightly, Moderate Rainfall Expected Tomorrow

Mumbai, June 11: According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai will be slightly affected by Cyclone Vayu that is developing in the Arabian Sea. Mumbai is likely to witness moderate rainfall tomorrow i.e. June 12 as Cyclone Vayu passes by. The maximum impact of the cyclonic storm would be seen in Gujarat with heavy rains and winds sweeping across parts of the state.
"Mumbai will also be affected by Vayu Cyclone but not severely. Cyclone is expected to cross from 250-300 km away, parallel to the Mumbai coast tomorrow," Deputy Director General of Meteorology, IMD, said. “The weather system is likely to move north-northwest, towards the Maharashtra and Goa coast, paving way for rain and thundershowers along both south and north Konkan, including Mumbai,” he added. Cyclone Vayu is very likely to intensify further into a Cyclonic Storm during next 24 hours and into a Severe Cyclonic Storm in subsequent 24 hours. It is likely to move north-northwestwards during next 72 hours, the IMD said on Monday. According to private weather forecaster, Skymet, sea conditions are likely to be rough to very rough along the Maharashtra coast on June 12 as the Cyclone Vayu passes by.
The cyclone is expected to be closest to the Saurashtra Coast by June 12 and between June 12 and June 14, the western-most parts of Saurashtra and Kutch region in Gujarat could witness squally winds and heavy to very heavy rains, MeT officials said. "With likely cyclonic storm even intensifying into a severe cyclone, places like Jamnagar, Somnath, Porbandar, Dwarka and Nailiya in Kutch" would be impacted, and could even herald pre-monsoons rain across Gujarat.
The cyclone might bring light showers to cities, like Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Rajkot, Veraval and Bhuj on June 12 and June 13.
