Mumbai Rains: 2 BMC Officials Dead While Trying to Drain Out Water in Goregaon, Child Feared Drowned in Nallasopara
Following heavy rainfall in Mumbai and its surrounding areas, there have been three separate incidents of drowning reported from the city. Two BMC officials have died and a seven-year-old boy got drowned in a nullah in Nallasopara. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rains in several parts of the city and suburbs in the next 48 hours.
Mumbai, September 5: Following heavy rainfall in Mumbai and its surrounding areas, there have been three separate incidents of drowning reported from the city. According to a Times of India report, the boy drowned in an overflowing nullah while playing with his three-year-old sister at around 7 pm on Wednesday. Fire brigade officials tried to locate the body of the child, but they have not been able to do so till late in the night. Nullahs have been overflowing since Tuesday due to the torrential rainfall which the city received.
In the other incident, two BMC officials died after they were trying to drain out rainwater in Goregaon. Even though the workers were pulled out, but were declared dead on being brought to the hospital. One of the officials allegedly died to a heart attack and the reason for the death of the other person is not known yet.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rains in several parts of the city and suburbs in the next 48 hours. The IMD said, “Mumbai most likely to get continuous rains and showers with the possibility of extremely heavy falls at isolated places in city and suburbs for the next 48 hours.”
Schools and junior colleges in Mumbai, Thane and Konkan region are shut on Thursday in view of the forecast of heavy rains. On Wednesday, heavy rains paralysed normal life across Mumbai, disrupting road and rail traffic and flight operations. Reportedly, 20 flights were cancelled and 280 affected.
