Police sub-inspector Dhanaji Sakharam Raut, who was posted at Andheri Government Railway Police (GRP), allegedly committed suicide on Monday. The 43-year-old was out on a morning resident in a garden at his residence in Thane's Vartak Nagar when he hanged himself.

According to a report in mid-day, Raut had recently completed his probation period and had received an order for his new posting at GRP headquarters in Mumbai's Wadi Bandar. A senior police official told the daily that Raut was having no work pressure as probationary officers don't get much responsibility.

In the last five-and-a-half years from January 2014 till May 2019, 807 policemen have died prematurely due to various ailments. In some cases, the causes were unnatural, accidents and suicides. According to figures compiled by Mumbai Police, heart aliments remain tthe topmost cop-killer due to the erratic work schedules and lifestyles of the policemen.
