Mumbai: Over 26,000 Girls And Women Went Missing in Last Four Years, 2,264 Still Untraceable
Between 2013 to 2017, a total of 26,708 women, including 5,056 minor girls, had gone missing.
Mumbai, November 20: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday informed the state assembly that more than 26,000 girls and women went missing from Mumbai in last four years. Fadavis also said of those who went missing, 2,264 are yet to be traced. The chief minister was replying to a question raised by BJP MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha and others.
"Between 2013 to 2017, a total of 26,708 women, including 5,056 minor girls, had gone missing, out of which 24,444 were found. However, 2,264 of them are yet to be traced," Fadnavis said. Of 5,056 minor girls who were kidnapped or went missing from Mumbai, 4,758 were found, while 298 are yet to be traced, according to the chief minister's reply. Similarly, a total of 21,652 adult females had gone missing of whom 19,686 have been traced and 1,966 women are still missing. Fadnavis, who holds the Home portfolio, reiterated that all missing complaints regarding minors should be registered as kidnapping and not missing as per the Supreme Court directive given in 2013.
All police stations in Maharashtra have been asked to follow a standard operating procedure (SOP) prepared to trace missing persons. Three different websites www.trackthemissingchild.gov.in, www.mumbaipolice.gov.in, www.shodh.gov.in and toll-free helpline 1098 have also been activated.
