Mumbai, March 6: Mumbai is considered the safest metro for women in India, but the maximum city is slowly losing its reputation. In the last few years, there has been an exponential increase in the list of crimes against women, such as – incidences of rape, molestation and rioting – reports Praja Foundation. With the International Women’s Day to be celebrated on March 8, let's take a look at the safety condition for women in the maximum city.
According to the report, published by the NGO, the number of crimes like rape, molestation, and rioting increased by 83 per cent, 95 per cent and 36 per cent respectively from 2013-14 to 2017-18. The report further states that during the financial year 2015-16 to 2017-18 only, crimes under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) increased by 19 per cent. During the year 2015-16, a total of 891 criminal cases were filed under the POCSO Act alone. Also, there was a decrease of the shortage of 22 per cent in the Mumbai police force by July 2018, says the report. It further adds most of the time people do not report the crime as 32 per cent citizens do not believe in police and legal machinery.
Briefing more, the report state that 23 per cent citizens found talking to police officers as a painful thing and other 25 percent do not report as they of fear that they would get stuck in the police investigation. According to an estimate, only five MLAs from South Mumbai, two MLAs from North Mumbai, two MLAs from North Mumbai have asked questions on rape in the conventions of 2017-18.
