Mumbai Metro Project: Around 800 Trees Transplanted by MMRCL at Various Locations Including Aarey Dead, Claims Report
After Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) claimed that it had transplanted many trees removed for the Metro line from Aarey Colony, reports surfaced that most the trees have died. Around 1,800 trees have allegedly been transplanted by the MMRCL at various locations in Mumbai including Aarey.
Mumbai, October 15: After Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) claimed that it had transplanted many trees removed for the Metro line from Aarey Colony, reports surfaced that most the trees have died. Around 1,800 trees have allegedly been transplanted by the MMRCL at various locations in Mumbai including Aarey and Sanjay Gandhi National Park. According to a report published in India Today, 800 of the 1,800 trees were already dead. Many of the trees reportedly have also dried out, and only some trees had stems. Some activists also claimed that the trees that MMRCL is transplanting are the trees which were killed.
“When we did the last inspection, over 800 trees were already dead. Only stems can be seen. Over 50 per cent of the trees transplanted are dead,” reported India Today quoting Zoru Bathena, a member of the inspection committee which inspect the transplanted trees. The MMRCL has transplanted hundreds of trees removed from the Metro 3 alignment in the maximum city since 2017. Earlier this month, ordered the Maharashtra Government to stop cutting more trees at Aarey Colony in Mumbai. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appearing for Maharashtra Government assured the bench that henceforth no trees will be cut for the proposed Mumbai Metro car shed in the metropolis. However, before the top court’s order, over 2,100 were already cut down by the authorities.
