Mumbai May Face Water Shortage as Lake Levels Dip, BMC Likely to Cut Water Supply
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) may announce a cut in water supply to ensure that the water stock lasts up to next monsoon.
Mumbai, November 12: There could be the shortage of water in Mumbai as levels of the seven lakes that supply potable water to the city are at nearly 77 per cent as compared to 93 per cent last year. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) may announce a cut in water supply to ensure that the water stock lasts up to next monsoon.
On Sunday, Mumbai's water stock was 11.11 lakh million litres. However, in 2017, it was 13.33 lakh million litres on the corresponding day, according to a TOI report. It means the water stock in the seven lakes was 2 lakh million litres less as compared to last year. In view of the shortage, civic officials had hinted at rotating water supply in the financial capital.
Mumbai recorded a meagre 73mm of rain in September this year, lowest in last 27 years. The last time Mumbai recorded such low rainfall in September was in 1991 when it was at 58.7mm. The city, thus, has got only 20 per cent of the required rainfall.
