Mumbai, December 17: At least six were killed and 157 left injured after a massive fire was reported at a government hospital in Andheri's Marol. Among those killed includes a two-month-old baby, whose body has been recovered. The firefighting operation lasted for nearly 7 hours, as the flames were brought under control around midnight.

The fire at ESIC Kamgar Hospital first broke out at around 4:20pm, and was categorised as "Level-3" blaze -- which is defined as a major incident. By 4:54pm, the fire department raised it to "Level-4" and rushed at least 10 fire tenders to douse off the flames. Two Were Killed in Blaze at Andheri Chawl in November.

Six water tankers, three turn table ladders and 20 ambulances were also sent to the site of accident for necessary assistance. As per officials, the injured have been rushed to Cooper Hospital, P. Thakre Hospital (Trauma), Holy Spirit Hospital and Seven Hills Hospital for treatment.

The BMC's Disaster Management Cell, which is aiding the Fire Brigade in the rescue operation, said  the identities of two among the six deceased is yet to be confirmed.

Reacting to the fatal incident, Mumbai Mayor V Mahadeshwar said an inquiry would be conducted to find the officials at fault. "The cause of the fire is not known yet. Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) is responsible for the fire audits, whether they carried out fire audits or not, that will be investigated," he added.
